For my critical essay I decided to
do Tom LeClair’s “closing the loop: White Noise” written in 1986. I chose his
because for me it broke everything down the best and was easy for my to
understand and read. At first I found the essay to be pretty confusing but as a
read It again and connected it to the book more it became very helpful. He
starts off his essay by talking a little bit about Don DeLillo’s different
pieces and compares them to White noise. But then after jumps into talking
about White Noise. He talks about the three different parts of it while also
paying close attention and pointing out the different aspect’s and key points
that help you to better understand DeLillo and what he is saying. One of the
strangest parts of the White Noise is how there are so many sentences that seem
be unfinished or a fragment. He is short with his word and as LeClair points
out they are usually “noun dominated”. When speaking about this in his essay he
goes over don’s writing style for the story while explaining it. In the story
the two main characters Jack and Babette are struggling to over come their fear
of death. LeClair does a great job talking about the three ways these two go
about overcoming this fear and at the same time he points out where so examples
as to where the steps are used.
I like LeClair’s critical essay
mostly because of one reason. He made me think about the story in different
ways he pointed out his way of thinking and viewing the story which were
different from mine. Because of this it gives you a bit of a different
perspective. Although the beginning of the essay is a little confusing over all
it helped me out a little and was interesting to read.
