At first I had a very difficult time understanding the story. After reading it and going over the story, I realized that Bartleby is the only character in the story with and actual name. I thought that was very strange at first then I realized that maybe Bartleby had a major impact then expected in the story. At first the reader can believe that Bartleby is just a bad worker who does not care about his job, or anything. Turkey and Nippers are far from each others age, and yet they do the same work. Unfortunately it showed that no matter how hard someone works, they might always be stuck in the middle class society. Turkey and Nippers do the same job as Bartleby, but they are not given real names in the story. This also makes the reader believe that middle class jobs, are somewhat being looked down upon. Even though the number of middle class workers out number the rest, they are still treated as if they don't mean as much. This is why Turkey and Nippers were not given real names in the story. To show that middle class society can be looked down upon.

bartleby assignment
"First, Turkey; second, Nippers; third, Ginger Nut. These may seem names, the like of which are not usually found in the Directory. In truth they were nicknames, mutually conferred upon each other by my three clerks, and were deemed expressive of their respective persons or characters." (par. 4)

Alexis,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you one hundred percent. It also took me a while to comprehend the story, I believe I read it more that once. Until I read your blog I realized that you are right about the three other scriveners not have real names. I am glad you brought that up. In the end I actually liked that story and I am thinking about reading it again to see what else I missed.
Great work!
