Good Readers and Good Writers

After reading Nabokov’s “Good Readers and Good Writers” I believe tat Nabokov’s Idea of what makes a good reader is a mixture of many things. One being that if you start a book already thinking you wont like it or be t all interested then you wont be. You will just pull yourself further away from the book. “Nothing is more boring or more unfair to the author that starting to read, say, Madame Bovary, with the preconceived notion that it is a denunciation of the bourgeoisie” (Nabokov). He believes that when opening a new book you must go in with and open mind and heart and be willing to enter a new world.

            Another thing he mentions in order to be a good reader is that you must re-read. Many people, including myself, often read a story and end up missing important details there fore not fully understanding the concept of the story. There are so many little details that are crucial to the story that get bi-pasted.

            In my opinion to be a good reader you must as Nabokov states go into the book with an open and willing mind, re-read what you don’t understand, have a good imagination, and be willing to us resources such as the dictionary to look up things you are unsure about.
